It was a night to remember as 3500 runners gave up their sleep to participate in the Educity Sundown Marathon Iskandar 2017, an event sponsored by EduCity Iskandar Malaysia.
The race was flagged-off by Tuan Haji Adib Azhari, Chairman of Iskandar Puteri Municipal Council at 8.30pm accompanied by Joanne Oei Wen Li, Managing Director of EduCity Iskandar Malaysia at the EduCity Sports Complex. Also present were Tuan Haji Noorazam bin Osman, Chief Executive Officer of SUKMA Johor and various government officials.
The race saw participation from international runners from Australia, USA, UK, Nepal, Indonesia, Singapore and more. Johorians also took the opportunity to have a magical nocturnal experience as they ran through the night under a blanket of stars, all in the quest to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Most runners participated in the half marathon and some went all out for the full marathon (42.195km) race categories. Benedict Neo Shun Jie from Malaysia clocked in at 01:25:52 for the Men’s half marathon category and Danielle Anderson from Australia finished at 01:55:46 for the Women’s half marathon. They each won RM1000 cash prizes. On the other hand, the winner for Men’s Full Marathon category was Mohamad Izam Shah Bin Zainal Abidin from Malaysia, who crossed the finishing line with a timing of 03:23:03, ahead of British runners, Henry De Renzy-Martin and Christopher. He took home RM1500 cash prize. Meanwhile, Esther Yong Keow Lee also from Malaysia won the Women’s Full Marathon category, with a finishing time of 04:20:11.
Datuk Ir Khairil Anwar Ahmad, President/Chief Executive Officer of Iskandar Investment Bhd said, “Educity Sundown Marathon Iskandar 2017 is part of IIB’s Iskandar Puteri Active initiative to position Iskandar Puteri as a sporting destination and to promote a healthy lifestyle. Moving ahead, IIB will lead in bringing more sports events in Iskandar Puteri throughout 2017 – 2018, making Iskandar Puteri as a sports hub and destination in the region, especially with SUKMA coming to Johor next year.”
Supporters and finishers of the run were treated to exciting activities in the Race Village, such as band performances, overnight movie screenings as well as the presence of food trucks. “At least 4000 people turned up at the Race Village”, said Mohd Bukhari Ismail, Race Director for the event.
Sundown Marathon founder, Adrian Mok was also on-ground and excited to see how the Educity Iskandar edition has garnered such success to date.
