Senai International Airport recently celebrated a milestone by welcoming its three-millionth passenger for 2017, marking it as an important history for the state’s tourism industry as well the fact that it is the country’s only privately managed airport.
The lucky passenger was 32 year old Umi Kalsom Roseli, who was surprised by the greeting party that waited for her at the terminal’s Gate 1. She arrived at the airport at around 4.05pm via AirAsia’s AK6044 from Kuala Lumpur.
“It was a good way to end the year and welcome 2018,” said the assistant teacher of SJKC Yong Peng, Batu Pahat who won herself a pair of tickets to Kolkata, India courtesy of AirAsia.
Johor Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee Chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, led the welcoming party who also included Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd. Chief Executive Office Derick Basir and Tourism Johor Director Abdul Malik Ismail.
“The number of tourists coming in via Senai has increased significantly from 1.99 million passengers in 2013 to 2.3 million in 2014 and then 2.5 million in 2015 and 2.8 million in 2016 before hitting 3.1 million passengers in 2017,” said Tee.
He added the number of international air passengers also went up from 137,000 in 2013 to 431,000 in 2016.
