The Educity Sports Complex at Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru will play host to the second leg of the NAZA National Seven Rugby Series on 10 and 11th March 2018.
The first leg took place in Melaka on 3rd and 4th March at the Hang Tuah Stadium and the series will end on 24th and 25th March 2018 in Ipoh.
This was announced by Johor Rugby Union President Haji Mohd Noorazam bin Dato’ Haji Osman at a press conference.
Johor rugby fans will have a feast of rugby matches; 35 matches will take place over the two days with eight teams in the Men’s Open Category and six teams in the Women’s Open Category.
This year is the first time that the Sevens will be held in a Series format and also a first for Johor to field a women’s rugby team.
Noorazam said that Johor in particular is keen to develop rugby as a major sport for and estimates that the state has a potential pool of 5,000 players in its schools and colleges.
“It is a game that builds character and leadership and Johor is keen to participate
in the national development of this sport.
“World Rugby has initiated, and is assisting with funding, a global ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme which the Youth and Sports Ministry has embraced and is promoting throughout the country to attract more youngsters into the game,” Noorazam said.
This is spurred by Malaysia’s success at the international level.
“We are ranked 46th out of 105 rugby teams worldwide while in Asia, we are ranked 4th”, said Noorazam.
“At the South East Asia (SEA) games last year, Malaysia took Gold in the men’s category while the women’s team took home the Bronze, which I believe to be the first time ever,” he added.
“For the Sevens Series we are ranked 4th but 1st in the national Rugby Union, said Noorazam.
Coaching the Johor team is Fijian Josevata Bola who was part of the Fiji national team in 2004 at the Argentina 7s and who played for Negeri Sembilan Wanderers in 2007.
Johor Rugby Union and Johor Sports Council have continued its collaboration with Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) and Educity to provide the venue and accommodation for the participating teams.
Also present at the press conference were Akmal Ahmad, Chief Operating Officer of Iskandar Investment Berhad, Fizwan bin Dato’ Haji Mohd Rashidi Team Manager for Johor National 7s and SUKMA Johor, Johor Rugby Union officials and team coaches and players.
