The Expat Group (TEG), publishers of the magazine for expatriates working in Malaysia, The Expat, had recently organised a December’s Expat Mingle Event at Johor Bahru’s landmark hotel, Thistle Johor Bahru.
Expat Mingle is organised in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang, creating the space and opportunity for expatriates working and living in these three cities to get to know one another.
The December event took a diversion from the usual format which is usually a wine and dine occasion. This time it was very much a family affair, and true to the season’s spirit, the organisers had put together a children’s fashion show with 30 children where the girls were all dressed up and faces brightly glittered while some of the boys got on their favourite superhero masks and costumes.
In addition to the fun and gaiety, stalls were set up selling clothes, trinkets, and various other items, and a percentage of the proceeds would go to charity as would the collection from auctions organised on the night. There was also lucky draws for the guests.
“Our Mingle events aren’t usually so family orientated but we plan to have events like this once every year end,” said Poonam Singh, Consultant, TEG Media.
“Our first expat mingle in Johor was in 2014 at Thistle’s Oasis restaurant. The number of expatriates working and living in Johor has definitely increased since 2014 when we first started organising it. From once every two months, Expat Mingle JB is now almost monthly,” said Poonam.
About 189 people attended the December Expat Mingle JB charity night, in collaboration with Sofia Cole from Arty Party and Jane Teo from Nia Beauty Academy.
