The People Behind The Scenes

CHRISTOPHER LING trained in Drama and Theatre Arts at Middlesex University, UK and with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. He is the co-founder and artistic director of Malaysian theatre collective theatrethreesixty, and his productions have also toured Singapore and London.

He was awarded the BOH Cameronian Arts Award for Best Direction (Musical Theatre) in 2012. He also received the Anugerah Seni Negara Young Talent Award for Theatre Directing in 2009.

Chris’ directing credits include the Malaysian premieres of Tony Kushner’s ANGELS IN AMERICA, Duncan Macmillan’s EVERY BRILLIANT THING, the 10th-anniversary staging of Nick Choo’s musical THE EDGE, and most recently, the 16th BOH CAMERONIAN ARTS AWARDS ceremony.

NICK CHOO is a Malaysian composer, musician and playwright whose original works of musical theatre have been produced in Kuala Lumpur, Australia, South Korea and Singapore. They include the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards-nominated 2015 children’s musical ZAK ZEBRA’S AFRICAN SAFARI, which toured to South Korea for the launch of the Asian Cultural Complex in September that year.

Nick graduated in 20016 with a Masters of Arts in Journalism, Public Relations and Creative Industries from Murdoch University in Western Australia, where he continues to collaborate with his colleagues at Murdoch and in the wider Perth theatre scene, with projects such as 2017’s 4 IN 50: A MINI MUSICAL MARATHON. The work featured in the Perth Fringe World Festival and was nominated for a Theatre award.

Nick is the composer and lyricist of ALICE’S WONDERLAND, produced and presented by Cempaka Performing Arts Company in May 2017 – which led to Cempaka Schools being recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first school to produce an original musical at the professional level.

In 2013, his original piece DREAMING OUTSIDE THE BOX swept 8 out of 14 awards at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre’s Short+Sweet Musical festival — including Best Musical Director, Best Libretto, Best Composition, Best Overall Production and Audience’s Choice award.

He was the recipient of the inaugural Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Creative Excellence Award in 2014 for his work in Short+Sweet Musical over the years.

Nick is the also the composer, writer and lyricist of THE EDGE, which won several Boh Cameronian Arts Awards in 2014, including for Best Original Script/Lyrics and Best Musical Direction. The Edge made its Western Australian premiere in May 2018, with an all-Australian cast at The Blue Room Theatre in Perth.

Nick Choo will perform on keyboards at the musical in Johor Bahru, providing ‘live’ accompaniment at the show.
