“Wet Season” narrates the story of a life-changing friendship formed by a Chinese-language teacher in the throes of a struggling marriage with a fellow student. Diving into discourse surrounding feminism and immigration whilst navigating the changing landscape of Mandarin education in Singapore, the film weaves together a cohesive narrative exploring the complexity of the country’s most dynamic social issues. Singaporean band NEKO Highway’s lead singer, Kaye, composed and sings the official theme song, working with award-winning arranger Martin Tang and lyricist Tan Yu Xin to complete the final track.
Recalling the composition process of the song on piano, Kaye explains that as the song begins, the melody simulates the soft sound of raindrops, climbing into an emotional crescendo as it reaches its chorus, thrusting us into a climax before dipping back into the soft sounds of a light drizzle as the song ends, emulating the life cycle of a tropical storm.” Tan shares with us how the lyrics originated upon seeing the film, “A woman wakes up alone to an empty room, and in her loneliness, compels a bug who has lost its way to fly a path into the room.” Commenting further, he says, “It’s a very Singaporean film. The female protagonist is not passive in the face of adversity, and there is a stubbornness imbedded in her kindness. It’s complicated, just like how everyday life is.”
Famed Martin Tang’s agreement to assist in the production of the song was immediate upon hearing the demo. Tang, who has worked with the likes of aMEI and Stefanie Sun, expressed excitement in working again with new talents.
The theme song, also titled Wet Season, premiered on 6th November 2019 on UFM100.3 and its allied radio partners in the region and beyond. It will be released on all digital streaming platforms two days after on 8th November. The music video will also go live on YouTube the same day at noon. Wet Season has received great feedback at the recent PYIFF premiere in China, and will be soon heading to more film festivals and cinemas in cities like Taipei, Tokyo, Macao and Hong Kong. The drama film will open the 30th Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF) on 21st November 2019 at Capitol Theatre, and screening at local cinemas from 28th November.
NEKO Highway is a home-grown Singaporean band, featuring lead singer Kaye, keyboardist Sandy, and bassist Claire. The three of them officially came together last year, and released their first studio single, Dancing Cat, in February 2018. This single was a breakthrough hit for the trio, receiving their first two awards this year at the Global Chinese Golden Charts; Top 20 hits in the first half of 2019, and Best Newcomer of 2019 (Bronze Award). NEKO Highway has since released 3 singles. Wet Season will be their first project with Universal Music Singapore.
