Singapore Lyric Opera Presents: Bizet’s Carmen

Bizet's Carmen Promises a Sensational Spectacle of Drama, Passion and Opera's Most Recognisable Songs

A sensational spectacle of drama, passion and opera’s most recognisable songs including “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song”

Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO) will proudly present one of the most famous and popular pieces in the opera world, Bizet’s Carmen from end of August till the 1st of September 2019. Nancy Yuen, Artistic Director of SLO, will take on the role as staging director, bringing the passionate musical drama to life with dance, fights and dazzling visuals.

Carmen tells the story of the intriguing world of smugglers, cigarette factory workers, soldiers and most importantly, the bold, gorgeous, fiery and free-spirited Romani woman – Carmen. The shows on 30th and 31st of August will commence at 8pm, and 5pm on the 1st of September at the Esplanade Theatre.

Previously performed in 1998, 2002 and 2011, SLO aims to reach out to a wider audience base with the fourth revival of Carmen. After all, Carmen is arguably the most popular opera today, and the most accessible to opera first-timers. With a classic like Carmen, Yuen hopes that more people, opera lovers and non-opera lovers alike, will head down to the theatre to be enlivened by the unique experience of an opera performance.

“Carmen lives life to the fullest. She loves, she works, she fights, and she knows that somehow a dark destiny awaits. Femme fatale fits her description most aptly – she uses her sexuality to get what she wants. Don José, the soldier, falls for her and Escamillo, the charismatic toreador, adores her. Carmen is simply a power house! I look forward to sharing my take on this captivating character complemented with the most glorious music with the Singapore audience,” shared Yuen.

Carmen’s famed arias such as the “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song” are musical sensations that truly hold their own even beyond the opera world – they are regularly referenced in popular culture from radio to television to film. Instantly recognisable even to non-opera goers, these songs are sure to evoke a sense of nostalgia and adrenaline when heard live in their full operatic glory.

Set in Seville in the south of Spain, a beguiling and eccentric cigarette factory worker, Carmen, is caught between a jealous corporal, Don José, and a philanderer, Escamillo. Their brewing passions entangle them in a tempestuous relationship which culminates in one of opera’s most gripping finales. The four-act opera with music by Georges Bizet and libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy is sung in French with English and Chinese subtitles.

Bizet’s Carmen will be the concerted effort of some 120 performers which includes the main cast, SLO Chorus and SLO Children’s Choir, dancers, supers and orchestral musicians.
