Placing one step ahead in nation’s port development and transformation through the development of autonomous driving terminal tractors
Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) had successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Terberg Tractors Malaysia (TTM) to develop a comprehensive study on the viability of deploying autonomous driving terminal tractors to transfer containers within the terminal.
The agreement was inked between Marco Neelsen, PTP Chief Executive Officer and Boo Wei Ching, a member of the Board of Directors of TTM and witnessed by Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport (MOT) together with Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Bin Mohamad Noh, PTP Chairman and George Terberg, Chairman of The Royal Terberg Group.
“I am very pleased that PTP, in collaboration with Terberg Tractors Malaysia and also Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have taken the bold initiative towards automation. I believe today’s MOU signing will contribute greatly to MOT’s mission to strengthen the transportation system that is driven by technology that will also act as a catalyst for national development,” Loke said in his speech.
Due to the high turnover of local prime mover drivers who then join external hauliers or source for work in neighbouring Singapore, PTP’s Chairman, Dato’ Sri Che Khalib in his speech remarked that, “PTP in its quest to remain competitive and in search of higher efficiency and productivity has been undertaking some progressive development work. The development covers operations’ facilities, support facilities and infrastructure as well as system upgrade. All this is in line with our aspiration to become an advanced preferred port in the region. A port which operates and offers smart solutions that will help optimise operations, promote efficiency and reduce logistics costs in a safe environment.”
George Terberg, Chairman of The Royal Terberg Group in his statement said the company is taking a long-term view in everything and have committed innumerable man-hours and investments into the autonomous project.
