The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) brought much needed relief to parents of 170 children from 16 schools in the Gelang Patah area
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia’s largest container port situated in the Gelang Patah area of Johor, kicked off its CSR programme targeted to schools in the area with a Back-To-School Programme.
170 underprivileged pupils from 12 primary and 4 secondary schools received gifts valued at RM100 each, comprising of a school bag containing all the stationeries that they require for school.
Marco Neelsen, PTP’s Chief Executive Officer said in his address to the students, parents and teachers present at the event, that education creates empowerment and it is the catalyst for upward social mobility.
“As such we are delighted to be able to play a role in helping students and their families involved in the programme and we hope that this will boost the spirit of the students and further encourage them to strive for a better future,” he said.
“Who knows that one day the children here will be CEO of PTP or Parliamentarian for Gelang Patah,” he added, turning to Tuan Haji Mohammad Khairi A. Malik, UMNO Gelang Patah Division Chief who was present, along with Tuan Haji Shaharuddin Saari, the official representative from the Johor Bahru Education Department.
Neelsen said that PTP has been implementing the Back-To-School programme for 11 years beginning in 2007 with the cooperation of many local parties, such as the Johor Bahru Education department and the Gelang Patah UMNO division to deliver assistance and ease the burden of the needy.
Addressing the students specifically, Neelsen hopes that the schooling aid they received will motivate them to work harder and achieve good results.
“I urge all of you to be proactive and seize opportunities that are ever waiting for you because the world is continuously changing and evolving and it won’t wait for you.”
PTP’s other education-based CSR programmes include year-round activities of English language tuition, English Boot Camp, English Communication Workshop and Motivational Camps for students preparing for their UPSR and SPM examinations. Educational trips to local universities are also organised.
