Leading utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corporation Berhad inked a Certificate of Collaboration with the Department of Polytechnic Education at MMC’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas here in Johor Bahru.

Witnessing the signing ceremony was the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Sri Idris Jusoh while Dato’ Sri Che Khalib as Group Managing Director signed for MMC and Professor Dato’ Dr Mohd Ismail bin Abdul Aziz as Director General of Polytechnic and Community College Education attested his signature for the department.

In his speech, Dato Sri Idris said that the aim of his ministry is to become the nation’s premier provider of higher education in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and produce skilled talent to meet the increasing and growing demands of industries and to promote the development of individual careers and potential.

“I envision Malaysian Polytechnics becoming a leader in TVET, not just in Malaysia but within the Asia Pacific Region.

“With eight Malaysian Polytechnics receiving gold accreditation from the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC), the highest of any nation in the Asia Pacific, I believe this is certainly possible,” said Idris.

The collaboration sets up an MMC-Polytechnic Education Centre through the establishment of learning spaces, sharing of facilities, equipment and training venues at polytechnics, while MMC will offer opportunities for polytechnic students to undergo industrial or work-based training to equip them with real work experience. For the students, this would translate to better career prospects within the MMC group after graduation.

The Minister revealed that it is collaborating with over 100 companies, but this association with MMC is the biggest because of the sheer size and diversification of the group.

“We are very excited on the establishment of the MMC-Polytechnic Education Centre, which demonstrates how an industry and education can work together to help develop practical and industry relevant skills,” said Dato Sri Che Khalid, MMC’s Group Managing Director.

Khalid called the collaboration a smart partnership for MMC because they will have staff who are not only equipped academically but also with industrial training and experience for diversified businesses.
