I love a good food documentary. The amount of hours I’ve spent binge watching cooking shows on Netflix are uncountable. So when I was invited to watch the preview of Ramen Heads at GSC @ Paradigm Mall, Johor Bahru, I was quite excited. It could also be due to the fact that I used to work in one of the toughest Banquet kitchens in Singapore, so watching a documentary about cooking perfection gets me in the right kind of mood.
I’ve never thought much about ramen, let alone how much perfection can go into it. After watching Ramen Heads, I have a new respect for ramen chefs. Especially those that put in as much perfection into their craft as those featured in the documentary.
Ramen Heads follows the story of the Ramen masters of Japan, mainly that of Osamu Tomita; also known as the Ramen King. His customers start lining up for reservations as early as 6 am. He oversees everything in his restaurant and has won best ramen for 4 years in a row. This is what perfection looks like. After receiving a revelation at the age of 20 from eating ramen at the restaurant of legendary Kazuo Yamagishi, known at the time as the ‘Ramen god’, he decided to apprentice himself to him. Eight years later, he opened his own restaurant, and there was no stopping him.
My hats off to the Director Koki Shigena for doing a great job featuring the different chefs and the narration was in no way overpowering and he managed to show enough of each ramen chef without overpowering Osamu Tomita.
If anyone is as much a foodie as I am and loves ramen, then this is definitely something for you to watch.
