Why travel far when you can have the perfect stay and good food under one roof

When there can be a staycation, there can definitely be a foodcation as well! If you’re wondering what I’m on about – keep reading as I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to travel far and beyond for some Thai hospitality when Amari Johor Bahru is right downtown ticking off all the correct boxes.

We first checked-in to our spacious Junior Suite with Private balcony that faces our bustling city centre. We started our gastronomical journey by sampling some of the hotel’s best Thai fares curated and prepared by Michelin Star holder – Executive Sous Chef Kanokwan Pungjaroenkijkul or Chef Gina for short with her compatriot Chef Ekasit.

We indulged in Amari’s Sabai Thai set which is the current promotion till year end at the Amaya Food Gallery. It’s priced at RM50 nett per person (min 2 persons) from 12noon till 10pm. Chefs Gina and Ekasit sticking true to their Thai roots never failed us with their sumptuous set with appetisers like Yum Ta Lay (seafood salad) and Tom Kha Gai (Chicken in coconut soup) that was surprisingly light and flavoursome. The mains are; Choo Chee Goong (Prawn Red Curry), Phad Kra Prao Gai (Stir-fry Chicken with hot basil) and Pla Tod Makham (Deep fried fish slices in tamarind sauce). I cannot explain how authentic the flavours were as Chef Gina who has 25 years of experience brings in her ingredients from Thailand and braises her sauces for several hours ahead before whipping up a fare fit for a King or Queen! End the meal with Kao Niew Peak Lum Yai dessert (Black glutinous rice with longan, coconut milk, topped with mango slices).

We briefly took a break at the suite before continuing our “foodcation” at the Amaya Café where Pastry Chef Syeriff awaited us with his signature TWG Winter 3-Tier Afternoon Tea set. Although we don’t have winter in Malaysia but many know that Malaysians are fascinated by the snow and the need to keep ourselves warm maybe on a rainy day – so head to Amaya Café between 12noon till 6pm for its Afternoon Tea served with the finest TWG teas. Indulge in Strawberry Dipped in Chocolate to Roasted Curry Cashew Nuts to Fresh Fruit Tartlets to the amazingly crumbly Dried Mix Fruits Scones along with the Black Roaster Platter which has Smoked Salmon Tortilla Wraps to Mini Otak-Otak in Pandan bun Burger which has cleverly paired ingredients that’s so good, and keep some space for Sizzling Brownies with Ice-cream on a hot plate!

We then headed for a quick one to the Executive Lounge where Lynne, the hostess was waiting to show us some tlc! The Lounge is accessible to guests staying in executive rooms and suites and is open from 6.30am where breakfast is served to 10.30pm. We stayed for a while for its Cocktail Hour from 5pm till 7pm and had some hors d’oeuvres and beverages including cocktails. After burning “some” calories at a nearby mall, it was time to taste Amari’s latest In-room Dining option of Bento Sets. You have a choice of Vegetarian, Malay, Western and Thai Bento Box sets and we opted for the Thai one which has 5 items – available from 12.30pm till 10.30pm at RM49.99 nett per Bento Box.

With an extremely full tummy it was time to call it a night and the next morning after a swim, the final sendoff was a sumptuous breakfast buffet at Amaya Food Gallery which had continental and local favourites. It was finally time to say goodbye to our foodcation!
